Trigger points are painful spots in a skeletal muscle. This pain is often described by patients as a “muscle knot” that feels tight and tender. A trigger point is a small patch of tightly contracted muscles. These trigger points can be a result of numerous things including spinal injury or trauma, but lifestyle factors often play a big role (i.e. prolonged poor posture, mental and emotional stress manifesting into muscle tension).
Once the medical provider identifies trigger points, then a single or multiple injections can be given to the trigger point(s), releasing the “knot”. A combination of numbing medicine and steroid are administered to the affected area.
Generally, relief is obtained immediately and can last for 3 – 6 weeks.
