Arthritis in the joints can cause inflammation that may be contributing to generalized joint pain in areas such as knees, shoulder, hips, and other joints. This inflammation can be reduced by a simple injection. The injection contains a steroid that is a powerful anti-inflammatory drug and a local anesthetic. The injection is administered to the specified joint under ultrasound guidance to ensure proper needle placement. The local anesthetic provides immediate relief at the time of the injection, while the steroid will work over time, to reduce the inflammation that is contributing to your pain.
The effects of the anesthetic should start almost immediately but only last 8-24 hours. However, the effects of the steroid can take 2-5 days before pain relief may be noticed. Once the steroid takes effect, you can expect 4-6 weeks of relief. These injections can be repeated as needed for relief.
